The value of delegation

Delegation can be difficult, especially when you’ve grown your own business from scratch and spent years building your reputation. However, as your business grows your business administration can start to take up huge amounts of your working day. Sometimes it can be difficult to grow any further because of all of the other ‘stuff’ you have to do and you can become overwhelmed and overworked and spend way too much of what should be your leisure time working.

Yet, despite this, many people struggle to delegate these tasks out to people like me and one of the reasons I hear most frequently is because they can ‘do it themselves’.

And that’s true. For the most part you probably can do it yourself but that’s not really the point. Let me give you an example.

Now, not that I want to compare myself to an household appliance you understand, but I am perfectly capable of washing my clothes and my dishes myself and yet I have a washing machine and a dishwasher to do that for me. I also enjoy lighting a fire on a barbeque once in a while but, more often than not, I use the oven in my kitchen to cook my dinner. Because my time can be spent in much more productive ways and if I can use something else I can rely on to do those tasks then I will.

The point is not if I CAN do those things but if I SHOULD be doing them and, more importantly, what could I be doing instead.

And that is exactly the same for your business. As your business grows your admin increases and there are other more important things you should be doing instead of your administration. Because if you continue to do it all yourself then all of the other areas of your business will suffer.

Consider for a moment what you can earn in an hour; a really focused sales hour or a business meeting or an important prospect call or an hour spent creating whatever it is you may create for your business. What is the potential value of that hour? And then consider how many hours a week you spend on completing tasks you personally do not need to do. Multiply the two figures together and that’s how much money you are potentially missing out on by not delegating it.

I have a client who has doubled his weekly productivity since I’ve taken over just one aspect of his administration and, at roughly £300 an hour, that’s potentially a lot more money in the bank.

But it’s not just about the money either. It’s about your personal life too. How many evenings or weekends do you spend doing some aspect of your work when you should, and would really prefer, to be with your family and friends? How much is that time worth to you?

Delegation is about more than just letting someone else do the work you can do yourself. It is about maximising your time so that you can focus on doing the things that matter, that you really enjoy doing and that will grow your business (and your bank balance!). It also means having more time to spend with your friends and family.

Delegating is an invaluable and essential step in giving yourself more freedom both personally and professionally. So next time you feel overwhelmed by that to-do list think about which aspects you really have to do and which ones you can give to someone else. It really will make a difference.
